Emil Jones, Jr., who has served as the Democratic leader in the Illinois Senate since 1993, announced today that he would not seek reelection. First elected to the House in 1972 and to the Senate in 1983. He became minority leader in 1993 and president of the Senate in 2003. He is often described as Gov. Rod Blagojevich's principal ally in the legislature and as a mentor for Barack Obama.
A Chicago Tribune story lists six possible candidates to replace Sen. Jones as Democratic leader.
