In the biggest state legislative surprise of the night so far, Republicans appear to have won the Tennessee House by reaching at least 50 seats to take the majority. If this holds, it would be the first time Republicans have held a majority in the House since 1970.
In the Tennessee Senate, Republicans have also won a clear majority by a margin of 18-14-1 in a chamber that was previously tied. In another previously tied Senate, Republicans have gained the majority.
Republicans have also taken the Oklahoma Senate for the first time in the state's history.
Some other state legislative races have potential for major change but are still too close to call. The Texas House, currently controlled by Republicans, is still very much in play and could end up tied. The Ohio House is also hanging in the balance. Democrats have gained seats and could end up with a majority in Ohio's House.
With Democrats taking control of the New York Senate and the Delaware House, they now control every legislative chamber in the East north of Virginia, except for the Pennsylvania Senate.
