NCSL's education policy associate Robert Strange was featured in a photo on the front page of the Washington Post on Thursday playing U.S. Footy or Australian rules football. The team, Baltimore Washington Eagles, have become a powerhouse and will play for the national championship in a tournament this weekend in Ohio. Here is an excerpt from the article:
"This was supposed to be a story about what happens to young men who move to Washington for big new jobs, knowing nobody, who leave those big new jobs every evening and come home to empty apartments and lonely lives and who find themselves drawn to a sport bewildering to most Americans. It was a story about the bonds that come from running around on a field hitting people and then hitting the bars. It was about a little Australian rules football and a whole lot of beer. "
Robert, a native of Denver, Colorado, also played on the Denver U.S. Footy team and joined the Eagles shortly after re-locating to Washington, DC. The Post did the story as part of their series on "Our Lives Through Sport: A Look at How the Games Played by Washington Residents Help Define Our Region."
When asked how he felt seeing his face in newsstands around the District, Robert said it was "weird, but very exciting." NCSL wishes Robert and the Baltimore Washington Eagle good luck this weekend in the national championship tournament.
